Scores of flights in and out of the Ethiopia’s Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, one of Africa's busiest airports, were suspended on Tuesday after air traffic controllers went on strike.
Speaking to state broadcaster Ethiopian Television (ETV), Colonel Wossenyeleh Hunegnaw, Director General of Ethiopia Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA), said the strike was in protest at the suspension of holiday bonus payments to air traffic controllers and allegations of corruption within ECAA.
He further said the authority would take measures against striking staff and that flights would resume shortly. Industrial strikes are rare in Ethiopia, one of Africa's fast-growing economies, which also has the continent's largest successful state air carrier Ethiopian Airlines.
