Construction works on the road between Maputo and Ponta do Ouro, with an extension to the SA border have started and are due to be completed in 2017.

Both the funding for the estimated cost of over R1 billion and the construction company are from China.

From kilometre 100 on the 110km two-lane road from the Catembe Bridge at Maputo there will be a detour of about 10kms to the SA border.

According to Mozambican weekly newspaper, Domingo, there are also plans to build another two-lane road between Bela Vista and Boane, which will be about 63kms long.
