ITAC notified the proposed creation of a Rebate Item for stainless steel fasteners, which reads “Screws, bolts, coach screws, screw hooks, rivets, cotters, cotter-pins, washers (including spring washers) and similar articles, of stainless steel, classifiable in tariff heading 73.18, in such quantities, at such times and subject to such conditions as the International Trade Administration Commission may allow by specific permit, provided the Commission is satisfied that the subject goods are not available in the SACU region”.
The application was lodged by Fastenright (Pty) Ltd who reasoned that the importers of stainless steel fasteners have been negatively impacted by the duties recently imposed on steel fasteners, and that there were no local manufacturers of stainless steel fasteners in the SACU, and therefore, no reason for imposing customs duties on these products.
Comment is due by 22 September 2017.
