SPOORNET IS to make an all-out effort to assist all personnel faced with possible retrenchment when their findings on cost-saving moves and restructuring plans are revealed in September.
Transnet has set aside
R1,2 billion to reskill what it terms casualties of the retrenchment process within its various business units. Spoornet is to benefit under this windfall.
We have set aside R8 000 per head to retrain those who are affected by retrenchment, says Abner Mofokeng, Spoornet's general manager human resources.
We have also created an alternative employment office to help the retrenched to re-establish themselves. When it comes to outsourcing these people will receive priority in obtaining contracts.
Currently only 832 jobs have been identified as redundant, while more than 5 000 employees left Spoornet during last year after either reaching pensionable age or accepting mutual consent packages.
Initially it had been thought that an estimated 27 000 Spoornet jobs would be on the line in the restructuring process, but chief executive officer Zandile Jakavula has confirmed that many of these positions would be involved in Spoornet's outsourcing and privatisation programme, where the employees would, in most instances, be transferred to the new operator of the section concerned.
