JOY ORLEK SPOORNET HAS reiterated its support for private sector involvement in its rail regeneration efforts. With four, and sometimes five IMEX trains running on the Gauteng – Durban corridor, the possibility of selling a full train to a party which will then be committed to filling it is one of the initiatives being explored. “Our responsibility would be to haul it from origin to destination,” says executive manager strategy, Alex Masionoga. “Nothing has yet been confirmed – the industry wants to know where the responsibilities and risks lie before making a commitment. But the principle is in line with our longer term strategy of encouraging public / private participation in any rail solutions. “Industry needs to accept that they are part of the solution and that a high level of collaboration is required.”
