UNCONVENTIONAL is how recently appointed managing director of Spedag International describes himself. A hands-on man who believes in rolling up his sleeves and getting the job done - regardless of what that entails.
Six months since he took over, Beech has big expansion plans for the company.
First off is a move into the lucrative overborder market. We are targeting business into East Africa where we have our own offices, and already we've made good progress, Beech told FTW.
We see further potential in Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mozambique.
Project cargo is a second area of focus, and one which makes sense in view of Beech's strong background in the field.
Having experienced the shipping industry from both sides of the forwarder's desk, Beech believes he has what it takes to interface with both.
He started his career in Zimbabwe in 1979 at ground level as an entry clerk for a confirming house. Three years later he moved to South Africa to take up an appointment with Ocean Air, eventually taking over as export manager. He held several positions in the forwarding industry thereafter with the likes of AJ Keeler and Transkip. On the project side he was involved with the Mossgas Onshore Project, Fluor Engineers, Columbus Stainless Steel and BHP Minerals, Zimbabwe, co-founding Kestrel Shipping which specialised in project cargo.
On his growth plans in this direction, he commented: We have the expertise and must use it.
Headquartered in Isando, Spedag has offices at Johannesburg International Airport, Durban and Cape Town.
