Logistics specialist heads up division LOGISTICS MAJOR Spedag has bolstered its project cargo division with the appointment of Lorenz Pimpfinger to head up the operational management of project logistics for the African continent. Having served for many years as country manager of Spedag East Africa based in Kenya, Pimpfinger has the credentials to grow the business. Project logistics has long been one of the specialities of Spedag, says project co-ordinator Yvo Richner. Early this year the company secured a contract for the rehabilitation of a copper-mine in Kolwezi in the DRC. “The initial phase of the project focuses on the rebuilding of the mine’s infrastructure while a second phase will see the exportation of copper. “Spedag has been chosen to handle this project because we are one of the few contenders to operate Superlink-trucks all the way to Kolwezi. In addition we are also the only company to provide the client with air charter services directly to Kolwezi,” he told FTW. “The project is now in full swing with some 160 trucks already dispatched, and eight charter flights – including a Boeing 727 freighter – operated into Kolwezi.” Spedag has set up a dedicated support office on site with a professional team to oversee incoming supplies. Pimpfinger is based in Johannesburg, supported by a dedicated and specialised team in South Africa and across East Africa.
