Specialist divisions nail the bastards

THE KAZERNE Container Crime Unit concentrates on container theft from trains in the terminals and depots at City Deep.
Between November 99 and May 2000 the unit arrested 92 people, two of whom had orchestrated the falsification of paper work through shipping lines, enabling them to steal complete consignments.
The total value of the goods involved amounted to R6-million ranging from
R60 per incident to R1,5m.

THE SAPS Truck Hijack Unit reports an increase in the number of truck drivers becoming involved in the sale of their loads to criminals. Between November 1999 and May 2000 this unit arrested 10 truck drivers, five assistant truck drivers, 37 armed robbers and 34 receivers of stolen goods - 86 criminals in all.

IN THE same period the SA Border Police handled 14 cases of smuggling in containers and confiscated counterfeit goods to the value of R23-million.
