A SPECIALLY-designed crate that spells danger for the diamond smugglers of the world is currently being built by Wadeville-based Outsource Packaging. It will encase a new hi-tech X-ray machine.
“The package has to be built to ensure the highest level of protection for the item it will carry,” says sales and marketing manager Brett Vaughan. “This X-ray will scan an entire body in 13 seconds and provide an instant printout. Diamond companies worldwide have them on order and we are crating three a month. The designers have given us a thorough breakdown of the workings so that we are fully aware of the intricate and delicate consignment we are handling.
“It’s the type of specialised packaging we undertake. Our boxes can be developed to accommodate any specification, from the largest industrial and mining machinery to the smallest electronic component.”
And it’s not merely wooden crates that emerge from the Outsource Packaging warehouse either. Vaughan and operations director Sean da Silva recently completed a fibre-glass kit for the body of a racing car which had to be railed to Port Elizabeth.
The company has relocated to new premises in Wadeville, the third move in five years. Its present site is double the size of its previous premises.
“Heavy duty exports worldwide remain our major undertaking, with packages moving to every continent,” says Vaughan. “We pack crates into containers as well as sending them on their own. We recently introduced a new line, making timber decks to hold steel frames for industrial shelving.”
