South Africca loses competitive edge

South Africa is becoming relatively less connected to the world, according to the 2012 Unctad Review of Maritime Transport. South Africa ranks 31st in terms of container port throughput, at around 3 924 000 containers in 2011. This is down from 30th in 2010. Number 1, China, moved around 138 391 000 TEUs in the same year. The country ranks 39th on the liner connectivity index – down from 32 in 2004.
