Africa is on the move
– and with it comes
an increased hunger
for technological
solutions.
According to Michael Henning
of software solutions provider
Easyclear, there has been a
significant increase in enquiries
for software from African
countries, especially the likes
of Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia
and Swaziland.
“Africa
offers
very good
opportunity
for new
business,”
Henning told
FTW. “We
have a large
footprint
when it
comes to
road freight declarations and
many of our clients are also
seeing an increase in trade with
Mozambique, Zimbabwe and
Namibia.”
At the same time, he said,
project cargo volumes –
particularly to West Africa – also
seemed to be increasing.
“The outlook for the sector is
very positive – predominantly
due to an increase in
infrastructure
development and
renewable energy
projects.”
More cargo
simply meant the
need for more
systems, said
Henning, which
was good news for
software solutions
providers willing
to take on the
African beast.
“Poor infrastructure, nontariff
barriers and poor trade
facilitation remain a challenge
to existing operations on the
continent – and the result is that
it costs almost twice as much to
move freight across a border in
sub-Saharan Africa than it does
between other countries.”
He said despite these
challenges Easyclear was
committed to growing its
footprint on the continent.
“We have recently embarked
on a project to integrate with
Mozambique's MCNET,” he said.
“The discussions are still at an
early stage but we are hoping
to have a pilot project up and
running by the end of this year.
The aim is to facilitate trade
and provide a more seamless
f low of data between the two
countries. The next step –
based on the success of the
pilot – will be to look at
other countries where this
model can be deployed
and implemented.”
