The South African soft citrus export season has ended and it has been a record in terms of the volumes packed for export.
According to the latest Citrus Growers’ Association (CGA) report, 30.9 million 15 kg cartons were packed this year. This surpasses the 2020 volume of 23.6m cartons.
“The initial estimate in March 2021 was for 30.5m cartons. The biggest region (Boland), at 6.3m cartons, was 19% over the estimate; Western Cape, at 5.8m, was 5% above the estimate; and Burgersfort/Ohrigstad, at 4.2m, was 11% over the estimate,” the report read.
Europe is the largest market - importing 114 000 tonnes. They were followed by the United Kingdom (84 000 tonnes), Middle East (65 000 tonnes), and North America (53 000 tonnes). South East Asia imported 42 000 tonnes, rounding up the top five importing markets.
