THE TBN Club has made a four figure donation on behalf of its members to the Mission of Seafarers for its good work among seamen visiting South African ports. The recent unfortunate events surrounding the Sea Elegance highlighted the unexpected plight that can strike visiting seafarers and the needs the Mission fulfils. After the disaster, crew members were taken to the Mission where they were able to make phone calls to reassure their families back home. Spiritual counselling and advice was also given by the Mission’s chaplain. “We give sailors on shore leave a base from where they can make a phone call to family, play snooker, read a book or watch a video, use the Internet or enjoy a meal, all at low cost,” says the Mission’s Chris Aitken. The TBN Club is a semi-formal gathering of people employed in South Africa’s maritime industry and meets for lunch every second month to provide networking opportunities.
