CMA CGM has announced the imposition of bunker-related surcharges on all cargo on worldwide trades.
A US$55 per TEU surcharge will be applied on dry cargo with a US$85 per TEU surcharge on reefer cargo which will be implemented from 1 June for non-FMC (United States Federal Maritime Commission) trades and from 1 July for Taiwan and FMC trades.
These amounts will be re-evaluated on a monthly basis.
According to the French shipping line, this is due to the “significant” increase in bunker prices since the beginning of the year. However, a spokesperson from fuel supplier Cockett Marine told FTW Online that there had not been any significant increases in bunker prices this year, especially in the African region.
She noted that prices in the bunker market were dependent on the price of crude oil and varied from day to day, adding that bunker prices had gone up and down over the course of this year which was normal for the market.
