Shipping line adds weighbridge in Durban

The Ambrose Park MSC weighbridge.

The second Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) weighbridge in Durban is now operational.

MSC director Glenn Delve told FTW Online that the additional facility – located in Ambrose Park - would help to ease the backlog. The first is based in Hamburg Road.

Both are, according to MSC, legally compliant with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Safety of Life at Sea (Solas) Convention and will provide customers with the option of weighing containers’ VGM (verified gross mass) using method one under the Solas regulations.

According to the World Shipping Council (WSC), method one uses certified weighing equipment to weigh the full container after it has been packed. Delve said that the new VGM ruling had made a significant difference to the loading of containers and that the safety of vessels was “much improved”.
