Shipping ‘great’ dies

ALAN PEAT HARRY MILLARD – one of the best-known faces in the SA shipping industry - died in Durban in the last week of June. For many years Millard was the principal surveyor for Africa (which at times also included the Arabian Gulf ) for the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), and recognised as a friend of everyone. He was involved in any number of cases of shipping accidents on the SA coast – and amongst those making front-page news were the Amy Lykes running aground in the 60s, the tanker Wafra wrecked just off Cape Agulhas, and the collision of the two sister ships, the 300 000-ton-plus Venpet and Venore. Millard also gave a lot of his valuable time to the training of surveyors in SA. “He was an icon in the shipping industry,” said colleague and friend, Peter Greiner of Marcol. Those at FTW who knew him send condolences to the Millard family in SA and overseas.
