Service delivery protests – N3 carefully monitored

The N3 past Harrismith in KwaZulu-Natal seems free and clear this morning after a message was circulated on social media over the weekend warning transporters of a planned shutdown from Monday, May 24 (*).

The shutdown over service delivery led the local police station commander to warn business owners and managers to take appropriate steps to safeguard themselves.

“While we cannot prescribe what steps you should take, we urge you to consider your safety and that of your staff,” the message said.

It advised people to take the steps they deemed necessary, “including possible extra security to keep your premises safe, possibly working from home etc”.

This morning though the N3 Toll Concession reported that there were no reported incidents on the highway.

Regional police spokesperson warrant officer Mmako Mophiring confirmed this.

“There is still movement of transport in the area, both on the N3 and N5 – the highway towards Bethlehem.

“We are still monitoring the situation, but there is nothing to report at this stage.”

However, Mophiring advised transporters to remain vigilant at all times.

(*) This report was updated shortly after it was posted. According to footage seen by the Transit Assistance Bureau (Transist), there is stone throwing on the highway at the moment (10:50). The footage shows police vans turning trucks around in the vicinity of the Engen Bergview on the N3 past Harrismith. In the footage smoke can be seen drifting across the road although it seems to be because of controlled burning adjacent to the highway.
