As Africa edges closer to autumn, ushering in cooler air that appears to be conducive to certain cold weather viral conditions like the coronavirus (Covid-19), Senegal has recorded its second case of infection.
This was confirmed by the ministry of health in Dakar yesterday.
The confirmation comes after a French national who flew in from Paris on 29 February was positively diagnosed with the virus.
The country’s first case of Covid-19 was confirmed on Monday, also linked to a French national who is resident in Senegal.
The two cases, following a day after one another, underpins the importance of strict restrictions placed on travel and tourism.
Earlier fellow West African country, Nigeria, also recorded a Covid-19 case after an Italian national arrived in Lagos where he is currently in quarantine.
The Senegalese confirmations bring the tally of sub-Saharan countries with corona cases to two.
Together with Algeria, Morocco, Egypt and Ethiopia, six out of Africa’s 55 countries now have recorded cases of Covid-19. – Eugene Goddard
