Selective outsourcing provides single point of entry

JOY ORLEK STREAMLINED SUPPLY chain logistics is all about integration, a principle that Safmarine has embraced with gusto. “Our traditional port to port service has now become another link in the logistics chain and is no longer the primary focus,” says Paul Zunckel, manager of the line’s logistics division. “Through selective outsourcing Safmarine is involved in all aspects, from container packing and destuffing to documentation, customs clearing and forwarding, marine insurance and warehousing.” Global trends indicate that shippers need a single point of entry for all their logistics requirements while they concentrate on their core business, says Zunckel. “Safmarine has established a dedicated department which focuses on providing this single point of entry through selective outsourcing . “This division effectively is the glue that manages and holds the logistics chain together. But we believe we have taken this one step further, differentiating ourselves by positioning Safmarine as a niche player with the personalised touch.” The line selectively targets its customer base, focusing on value added solutions. “We measure up pretty well, particularly in Africa, where we have a greater understanding of local conditions and the tailor-made solutions needed to overcome the challenges presented by logistics in Africa.” Recognising the crucial role played by streamlined documentation procedures, the line has put in place a range of initiatives - on the seafreight leg it offers electronic booking facilities and arrival notification forms while landside IT capabilities include the personalised “my Safmarine” system, enabling customers’ IT requirements to be tailor-made to suit their individual requirements.
