Securing global supply chains is Sars’ mandate

The implementation of modern procedures, technologies and techniques by the South African Revenue Service (Sars) are all designed to increase the country’s trade and grow the economy, according to Gene Ravele, Sars chief officer customs and border management. Speaking at the annual Saaff conference he said more than 50% of South Africa’s GDP was trade-related. “We rank consistently amongst the top importers and exporters globally. Annually we see more than seven million goods declarations being processed and trade valued at over R1 trillion flowing into, through and out of South Africa.” He said Sars was committed to facilitating and increasing trade while also being the first line of control to protect the SA economy and the wellbeing of society by protecting business from illegal and unfair trade practices. “The commitment also extends to ensuring South Africa is seen as a safe and trusted trading partner, by securing our international supply chains in partnership with business, with other Customs administrations and with other agencies and bodies involved in the regulation of international trade and travel.”
