Scrap the ‘high-cube regulation’, pollsters say

If response so far to yesterday’s post about the contentious “high-cube regulation” 224(b) of South Africa’s National Road Traffic Act (NRTA) is any indication, the road freight industry wants it scrapped.

This afternoon at 13:30, 89% of pollsters said the hated regulation, limiting the height of an ISO container when carried on the back of a truck, had said “yes” to scrapping it.

Eleven per cent said no.

Via social media transporters and interested parties also weighed in on the conversation.

One of them, who attended the Road Freight Association’s annual convention last Saturday, reiterated that the regulation, effective since January 2 last year, was an insurance concern.

“Let’s not forget the real issue,” the transporter said.

“If something goes wrong, insurance might not pay out if you are in contravention of the NRTA. We need clarity and if we can’t get clarity the regulation must be scrapped.”

Another freight industry representative pointed out that ISO containers were a global supply-chain standard.

“It’s an issue that should be addressed once and for all as it pops its head out every few years.

“If the infrastructure can handle the height, why not adjust the rule?”
