The biggest challenge for South African wind farm logistics, according to SDV’s Caroline Brownson and Venesh Basdew, is the availability of transporters, as well as the capacity of their trucks. “We see transporters responding to the increased demand by bringing in new trailers from their overseas offices, but the projects are not happening fast enough to see the trailers coming in fast enough for us to utilise where the need exists now,” Basdew said. Another key challenge for the logistics industry is suitable experience in project managers. “Because this is a sector of logistics that is entering boom phase, everyone would like to call him – or herself – an abnormal cargo handler, whereas you really need a lot of experience in this business,” Basdew said.
