IMPORTERS ARE well advised to get accredited with Customs in order to ensure EDI clearance of their cargo. While those using accredited clearing agents currently enjoy the benefits of electronic clearance, this could be short-lived. According to trade consultants Deloitte, SA Revenue Service has indicated that going forward, unless both the clearing agent and the importer are accredited, they will not be able to make use of the EDI clearance system and will need to provide manual documentation. The electronic option speeds up clearances from days to hours.
