The latest trade statistics released by South Africa Revenue Service (Sars) reveal a trade balance surplus of R1.14 billion for April.
This is significantly lower than the R4.26 billion surplus recorded in April last year.
Export values amounted to R88.5 billion, down 9.8% from March, while imports of R87.36 billion were 1.6% lower than the previous month.
In April this year exports were 2% lower than April 2017, while imports were 1.5% higher than the same month last year.
