SAPS makes breakthrough in Ortia follow-home robberies

A heightened security plan has been implemented at OR Tambo International Airport following an increase in crime.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) made a significant breakthrough in the airport follow-home robberies at OR Tambo International Airport (Ortia) this past weekend.

Acting on information, Saps monitored a security vehicle contracted to work at Ortia and noticed that it was following a sedan travelling to Sandton from the airport.

One of the two occupants of the vehicle was found to be a security company manager wanted in a case of possession of an unlicensed firearm and armed robbery in Limpopo. He led the police team to a further four suspects in Hillbrow.

Police were able to recover passports, at least 15 cellphones and several luggage bags.

“We still have a lot to do to solve the many robberies that were committed and to prevent new ones from taking place - and we won’t rest until we reach a positive outcome,” said deputy national commissioner for policing, Fanie Masemola.

The six suspects appeared at the Wynberg Magistrates Court on charges of armed robbery, conspiracy to commit a crime and possession of an unlicensed firearm today (Monday).
