Between 70% and 80% of the total infrastructure spend on the African continent for the next 10 years will be allocated to the transport and utilities sector, said Dr Andrew Shaw, associate director for capital projects at consulting firm, PriceWaterhouse Coopers (PwC).
“For the sub-Saharan region, Nigeria and South Africa take the lead in the planned spending, taking 37% and 31% of the total spend in the region for the period 2015-2025,” said Shaw, speaking at the South African Association of Freight Forwarders (Saaff) congress in Durban today.
He added that Africa was still very much “behind the curve” in terms of infrastructure spend -representing less than half a trillion dollars of the total projected US$9 trillion spend globally.
“Unfortunately Africa is still not spending enough to keep up with its transport infrastructure demands,” said Shaw.
