Project cargo volumes are on the increase – not only in South Africa but also in neighbouring countries, according to Gys Jacobs of Jacobs Transport. The company, which works extensively in the mining and power sectors, has seen an increase in the likes of Zambia, but also locally. “Volumes in 2013 improved, and with several projects in the pipeline 2014 is going to be just as busy a year for project cargo,” said Jacobs. Which is why the company has invested heavily in improving capacity, having just added seven new trucks with cranes to its fleet. “One of the trends we have picked up is the more stringent standards at the various mines in terms of health and safety requirements. These are much higher than in the past,” he explained. “We therefore have to continuously keep up to date on all the various requirements – including vehicle inspections and driver training – to avoid being denied access on site.” He said the new vehicles were fitted with cranes that would allow the company to comply with the stringent health and safety requirements. “There is no room for mistakes – and having quality, wellmaintained equipment at all times to increase productivity and to eliminate down time is essential.” INSERT With several projects in the pipeline, 2014 is going to be just as busy as 2013. – Gys Jacobs CAPTION Gys and Seun Jacobs with one of their seven new trucks.
