Saecs adjusts service

THE SA-Europe Container Service has started the phase-out of three vessels in its intermediate service reducing it from a seven to a four-vessel configuration for the period September 2008 to end January 2009. The service will operate on a fortnightly frequency during this period. It’s a decision that doesn’t come as a surprise to industry sources contacted by FTW. “It’s a sign of the times,” said one commentator, “mirroring global and local economic trends as well as the growing focus away from traditional markets towards the Far East.” The decision is based on the seasonal decline in cargo demand and flows experienced during this period, according to a statement from the lines. “The second string/intermediate service will revert to seven vessels in February 2009, in line with the anticipated increase in demand for cargo space due to increased cargo flows.” The phase-out of vessels began with the Safmarine Memling on August 29, followed by MOL Springbok on September 5, with Maersk Hong to be phased out on September 26.
