SA wine gets global thumbs up

Confidence in South Africa’s wines is underscored by nearly a quarter of the 100 buyers at the 23rd annual Nedbank CWG Auction hailing from foreign climes and contributing 20% of total sales of R4.9 million. They came from as far as Russia, the UK and, for the first time, Canada, suggesting to auction manager Kate Jonker that foreign buyers are increasingly “recognising the brand” of South Africa’s top wines. When it comes to spending big, renowned Johannesburg restaurateur, Alan Pick, was not to be outdone, forking out the most money for the seventh consecutive year; R1 327 300.
