ALAN PEAT WITH THE international price of crude oil having hit record levels in the last two years, the price of diesel in SA has now reached worrying levels. Using government prices for wholesale diesel (delivered in the Durban area), Kevin Martin of road transporter Freightliner, has released to FTW his record of the upsurge in fuel costs since January last year. “Use of the wholesale price is the best basic price to gauge percentage increases,” he said, “as it cuts out mark-ups for the middle man, which can vary from retailer to retailer.” It has increased from R3.293 per litre in January 2004 to R5.236/l on November 1, 2005 – an increase of 59% in less than two years.
