With trade and investment having grown by 50% between Mozambique and South Africa over the past decade, a business forum has been established – comprising high level business delegations from both countries – to further boost relations between the two nations.
President Jacob Zuma announced this at a press conference yesterday afternoon (Thursday) following a meeting held with Mozambican president, Filipe Nyusi, at the Union Buildings.
He said Mozambique was one of South Africa's top trading partners in Africa, adding: “The message we want to communicate is simple and clear. We urge our private sector to invest in each other's territory and help create job opportunities.”
According to the Presidency, in 2014 South Africa exported R32.6 billion worth of products to Mozambique and imported products worth R11.3 billion.
"In our discussions we have noted with satisfaction the ever-growing cooperation in many sectors including trade and investment, defence and security, and cooperation in environmental matters - particularly anti-poaching initiatives and strategies. We focused on transport with particular focus on cross-border roads and aviation transport,” said Zuma.
Nyusi is on his first state visit to South Africa since assuming office in January this year.
