THE LATEST World Economic Forum Global Competitive Index provides some disappointing news for South Africa. It’s moved down the ranks from 36th position last year to 44th this year, due largely to inadequate infrastructure, health care and a deterioration in higher education and training. China and India come out tops among large developing economies. The US heads the overall ranking with Switzerland in second position, followed by Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Finland and Singapore . In last month’s World Bank’s Doing B usiness 2008 survey of global ease-ofdoing- business, SA moved from position 29 to 35 — falling out of the top 30 for the first time since the survey began five years ago.
