Richards Bay IDZ makes headway

The 50-year master plan for the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ) – which includes setting it up as one of the largest oil and gas hubs along Africa’s east coast – has been given the green light by the government.

“We have also seen an observable increase in interest by investors since we formally identified the five key expansion areas,” said Pumi Motsoahae, CEO of the RBIDZ, speaking at the Africa Ports & Harbours 2015 show in Johannesburg earlier this week.

According to him, investment and development opportunities for the R7.1-billion project  include renewable energy projects, metals beneficiation (specifically iron ore, aluminium and titanium), agro-processing, information and communications technology (ICT) and port optimisation projects (ship building and repairs, LNG terminal and an oil and gas shipyard amongst others).

The RBIDZ is set for completion by 2032.
