Freight News undertook a comparison of fuel prices in the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The place to fill up is Angola, which has some of the lowest fuel prices in the world thanks to government subsidies and its status as an oil-producing nation. Angolan diesel is $0.22 a litre and petrol $0.33 a litre. For comparison, the global average price for gasoline is approximately $1.28 a litre, and diesel averages $1.10 a litre. In contrast, Zimbabwe’s is among the world’s highest in Africa, at $1.55 a litre. The country has the third-highest diesel prices on the continent, after the Central African Republic at $2.247 a litre and Malawi at $1.576 a litre.Zimbabwe’s petrol, at $1.64 a litre, is second only to the Central African Republic at $1.82 a litre.Fuel prices in Zimbabwe are pushed up by high fuel taxes and levies, and are $0.54 for blended petrol and $0.52 for diesel. This brings the cost for a 600-litre tank of diesel to $930, compared to $131.40 in Angola and $730.20 in South Africa.A 60-litre tank of petrol will cost $91.80 in Zimbabwe, $19.68 in Angola and $72.72 in South Africa. South African diesel is the ninth most expensive in the region, at $1.22 a litre of diesel in March 2025.It is the 65th most expensive diesel in the world. Top dollar is paid in Hong Kong ($3.327) and lowest Vene z uel a ($0.0 0 4). The most expensive in Africa is in the Central African Republic at $2.247, or third globally after Hong Kong and Iceland.South Africa’s neighbours, Botswana, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini, all have lower diesel prices.
