Following the recent signing of the outstanding power purchase agreements – under the Department of Energy’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) – Minister of Energy, Jeff Radebe, officially launched the R9.4- billion concentrated solar power project, Xina Solar One, in Pofadder in the Northern Cape last Friday.
The plant has a total installed capacity of 100MW, with a five-hour thermal energy storage system using molten salts. Xina Solar One will supply clean electricity to Eskom under a 20-year power purchase agreement, contributing to South Africa’s goals of introducing up to 17 800MW of renewable energy by 2030.
