The KwaZulu Natal provincial government has allocated R50 million to fight cross-border crime between South Africa and Mozambique, along the Manguzi border town.
MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda, said that human trafficking, drug smuggling and theft of vehicles, which were then smuggled across the border, were all on the radar.
He explained that the Mozambican government had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the KZN provincial government for a number of crime prevention interventions. These include the erection of a jersey fence – a modular plastic barrier used to separate lanes of traffic – at the border, and the acquisition of 25 high-performance 4x4 vehicles for the SANDF.
