Oil and gas projects on the continent have been on the increase, according to Roelof Van Tonder, a director at Africa House.“We are currently tracking some 560 projects in Africa worth $500 billion,” he said. “At least 200 projects have been added this year alone. Leading the pack of new projects are Nigeria, Kenya, Mozambique and South Africa.”While many are still in the conceptual stage, a large number are already under construction while a significant proportion are undergoing feasibility studies.According to Van Tonder, 200 projects to the value of $180 billion are being tracked in southern Africa alone. “The high value of the projects in this region is largely due to the value of the projects under way in Mozambique, which also has the highest number of projects in the region – followed by South Africa and then Angola.”In East Africa there are currently 57 projects to the value of $89 billion being monitored of which most are in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, while in West Africa most of the projects are in Nigeria. “In this region the projects are close to the portside and involve several f loating storage developments.”Van Tonder said they were keeping track of 55 projects in Nigeria, 13 in Ghana and another 11 in Cameroon.Commenting on specific projects to keep an eye on he said the national deepwater oil and gas programme in Angola was notable as was the Botswana petroleum refinery and tank farm project.“In East Africa the new South Sudan crude oil refinery plant is an ongoing development of note and in West Africa, in Senegal, Kosmos Energy has confirmed a large gas resource offshore following the drilling of the Yakaar 2 appraisal well – an exciting new project to watch out for. In Ghana there is also the bulk liquid terminal project in Takoradi to keep an eye on.”
