KEVIN MAYHEW IN LINE with trends over the past few years, 2005 has kept the projects division of Safcor Panalpina busy with the movement of heavy cargo for capital projects for a number of major industries in KZN. Regional director, John Cummins, said these projects, which involve the movement of heavy components and machinery, suit the capacity of the division that prides itself on its ability to plan and manage such extraordinary and complex deliveries. “We have been busy in both Durban and Richards Bay during the past years with these capital projects which require a significant amount of supervision. This in many cases has meant going to oversee loading at the port of dispatch, often on vessels chartered by Panalpina, apart from the offloading and transportation once the cargo has arrived in South Africa,” he said. “We have also been able to utilise Panalpina’s dedicated air freighter to move project cargo required at short notice or on an emergency basis. A recent example of this was the airfreighting of 900 tons of materials to re-establish a production line. “Safcor Panalpina, a Bidvest company, rebranded last month as part of its journey to become a leading first tier supplier in innovative, value added and flexible supply chain solutions,” he said.
