MANDISA MAKETA was named this year’s SA Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers top student for scoring the highest average mark for all subjects passed in the professional qualifying exams. She took home the Safmarine floating trophy, a cheque for R1500, as well as the Garlicke & Bousfield Book Prize for R1000 for having passed Legal Principles of Shipping Business with the highest mark – in fact, she was the only SA candidate to obtain a distinction in this subject. Thirteen prizes in various categories were presented to students who achieved the highest marks in the April 2007 exams. As always, five Understanding Shipping bursaries were handed to Pat Brooker, maritime studies teacher at New Forest High School.
