While concessioning of container terminals is off the radar screen, TPT CE Tau Morwe believes the private sector will have a role to play in future terminal operations. “Currently the private sector participates in port operations in all areas except the container and car terminal. “Right now South Africa at a country level is sitting at 3.5m teus. “We need to create additional capacity and at some point, when we have created the necessary capacity in terms of infrastructure, the private sector can then come in. “If you look at countries like China, they created the necessary capacity and once everything was built that’s when they invited in the private sector – we need to make the necessary investment first.”
Private sector participation will be key
