Ports up efficiency

TWO NEW investments by Transnet in capital equipment for the ports of Durban and Cape Town both hold the promise of increased efficiency. Just launched at Durban’s Pier 1 container terminal is the R15-million automated gate system, which combines gate cameras and swipe card systems to read and check the relevant info on vehicles and containers – an electronic system designed to speed up the vehicle/ container throughput. At Cape Town, Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) has introduced two more massive Liebherr Super Post-Panamax cranes, capable of handling the world’s largest cargo vessels. This brings the tally of new cranes to four since the end of June.
