Ports of Seattle-Tacoma enter into alliance

According to the Wall Street Journal, the formerly rival US ports of Seattle and Tacoma have agreed to proceed with a proposed seaport alliance.

This is projected to double cargo volumes by 2026, a move which will allow the duo a competitive product offering matched against that available from nearby Canadian ports. It will also allow the ports to be able to handle the larger containerships coming into operation – especially after the Panama Canal expansion is completed next year.

The port authorities are reported to be retaining full-ownership of all independent assets once the alliance is finalised.
