Wider channel
is one of the
projects
PORTNET WILL spend R34-million on various projects, including a sand bypass system in the Eastern Cape.
The R26-million sand bypass will pump sand from King's Beach past the harbour wall.
It will save on dredging costs and widen the channel into the port, says PE port's Nad Govender.
Tenders are out for the project.
The other big expense is
R6-million on upgrading the radar system, while a further R2-million is being spent
on the workshops, and
R1,7-million on the bulk ore terminal.
Govender says the port of Port Elizabeth has plans to make both business and the public more aware of what it does and what it has to offer.
He would like to see the city again have pride in its port.
Plans include a port festival, a conference for industry and regular school tours.
