P&O NEDLLOYD has signed a five-year agreement to upgrade health and environmental safety procedures and equipment for the breaking up of ships at a ship recycling facility in Jiang Yin, China.
P&O Nedlloyd will
provide modern safety equipment to the yard, to allow ships to be recycled in a better way than currently exists, says P&O Nedlloyd SA managing director, Nigel Pusey. This includes asbestos protection suits, decontamination containers, equipment to remove gases and other materials, floating fences to contain the oil if it is spilled and pumps to clean up any spoiled oil.
The company has also commissioned a training programme amongst the yard's managers, workers and sub-contractors to raise awareness of safety and environmental standards.
