Transport minister Dipuo Peters has issued a short statement to say she is “deeply shocked” by a series of road accidents this past weekend in which more than 100 people died.
She has vowed to crack down harder on traffic offenders.
The accidents occurred in the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Swaziland between Friday and Sunday.
In one incident, around 65 young girls were killed when open-bed trucks on which they were being transported collided en route to the annual Reed Dance Festival.
According to Swaziland media, a 46-year-old truck driver appeared in court at the weekend on charges of negligence.
President Jacob Zuma weighed in as well, calling for “extraordinary caution and strict adherence” to the rules of the road.
He said law enforcement authorities could play their part but it was mainly up to the drivers to ensure that they adhered to the rules of the road.
