South Africa has increased its yellow maize imports to 934 000 metric tons (R2.2 billion), as the severe drought continues to sweep the country.
China-based Xinhua News Agency reported that South Africa would import from Argentina and Ukraine up until March next year if the drought persisted.
Grain SA economist Wandile Sihlobo noted that consumers could expect to feel the effects of the drought in the next three to four months; however, he added that “if forecasted rainfalls in the next two weeks do materialise, it might lead to some improvements in white maize production prospects.”
