This month saw the introduction by Transnet National Ports Authority of random breathalyser testing at the Port Elizabeth port. It’s part of the Transnet Substance Abuse Policy and will prevent anyone who is, or appears to be, intoxicated from entering or remaining on Transnet premises. Port manager Ester Goosen said that the Port Elizabeth harbour was the first to implement the procedure which would be rolled out to the Port of Ngqura and all other Transnet-managed ports in the near future. Visitors, employees and stakeholders will all be subjected to random testing. If their blood-alcohol concentrate is over the limit they will be required to leave the premises, with disciplinary repercussions for employees.
