The movement of perishables into Africa by road is on an upward trajectory as ports across the continent remain congested and struggle to cope with volumes. According to Karel-Jan Nothnagel of Afri-Cross Logistic Solutions, whose services include the movement of perishables in reefer trucks from South Africa to Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the increase has been dramatic, especially in the past few years. He said the company’s existing fleet had been increased to meet demand for trucks that take 28 pallets or 28 tons gross. But moving cargo over land in Africa means overcoming some very real logistical challenges – including finding ways of reducing time spent at border posts. Even more so when one is moving perishables, said Nothnagel. “For cargo moving into Angola for example we do our own import clearing,” he said. “This means we are now able to move cargo from Cape Town to Luanda in 6-9 days.”
