Indonesia’s shipping industry is reeling today after a bunker explosion that could have had catastrophic consequences had it included a nearby moored LPG vessel.
Video footage circulated about yesterday’s explosion at the PT Barokah Perkasa shipyard on the Indonesian island of Borneo, clearly shows a fire raging close to the Grace V.
Moments later a barge near the tanker, capable of holding 2 010 cubic metres of gas, erupts in a blaze of fire and flying debris.
More details from the shipyard in East Kalimantan are still expected, but reports suggest that the explosion was caused when oil in the barge overheated.
Indonesian news sources said the explosion could be heard in villages kilometres away.
Investigations into the incident are under way.
