Obama travels to East Africa to cement trade ties

Despite its challenges, Africa is incredibly dynamic and resilient, offering “extraordinary opportunities” for the United States, according to US president, Barack Obama.

Speaking at a White House reception on Wednesday ahead of his trade trip to Ethiopia and Kenya, Obama hailed the growth in American economic links with sub-Saharan Africa, commenting that the extended African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa) law would continue to encourage good governance, labour rights and human rights in Africa.

Obama last month signed a 10-year extension of the country's main trade authority with Africa — a 15-year effort that boosted US-Africa trade to US$73 billion last year, with US exports accounting for slightly more than half of that total, according to a White House statement.
